Curbing Greenhouse Gases

An article in the Huffington Post points out that raising the more than 10 billion animals required to feed this carniverous country is a major contributor to global warming (source). According to the article, if we all go vegetarian, it would reduce emissions more than if we all started driving a hybrid car. Water pollution, land degradation, and grain overuse are other potent side-effects of the american diet. For those of us interested in sustainability, going at least mostly vegetarian seems to be an important "wedge" towards curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

I read an interesting article recently that talked about cars in terms of "energy cost per mile driven" and interestingly, a hybrid was not the most efficient. It seems to for a number of reasons including the disposal of the specialized parts that they're made up of. Here's the article: http://www.caranddriver.com/dailyautoinsider/10871/doubts-cast-on-hybrid-efficiency.htm

Interesting article.
I wonder if these guys consider the additional energy consumption of replacing oil filters, batteries, oil, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, etc., in traditional combustion vehicles. I imagine a hybrid would not require replacement of these items so often. Because each requires its own manufacturing, transportation, and human labor to replace, this could add siginificantly to energy consumption attributable to the vehicle.
